Is a tattoo painful?

A common question about tattoos is, “Does getting a tattoo hurt?” or “How bad does it hurt to get inked?” Anyone with tattoos or a tattoo artist can tell you this question comes up all the time. It’s hard to describe the pain from a tattoo machine because it really varies from person to person. The quick answer is: “Yes, it hurts, but the level of pain is different for everyone.”

A few variables can impact how much pain you feel

Place on the body

Some areas hurt more than others. Areas where the skin is thin and close to bones or has many nerve ends tend to be more sore. For instance, tattoos on the ribs, spine, inner thighs, and wrists can be very painful because these areas have sensitive skin with bones or tendons nearby.

Personal Sensitivity

Everyone experiences pain differently based on age, gender, and body type. People with thin skin may feel more pain.

Tattoo size and difficulty

Bigger and more elaborate tattoos tend to take more time and can be more painful than those that are smaller and easier to draw.

Less painful places are generally considered to be where there is more muscle and fat, which help reduce discomfort. For example, the upper back, shoulders, upper arms and upper thighs.

If you are worried and you have doubts, you can always talk to the tattoo artist, as well as during the procedure to use anesthetic cream, in addition, the tattoo artist can give individual recommendations for preparation for the session.
